Day 2-3-4-5: (June 23, 24, 25, 26)

You’ll head to the domestic airport in Reykjavik to catch your flight to Akureyri in the north. We’ll meet Thor at the airport and start to make our way to our hotel in Mývatn for the next 3 nights, where we check in and get ready to head out.

While there we have a pack full schedule but as always in Iceland we need to work around the weather, at this time of year we do have sunset around 11pm and sunrise around 3:30am. There is a lot to photograph here and one of the days we’ve planned to do a whale watching tour where we’ll hopefully have good photo opportunities to photograph these giants.

Possible locations:

Goðafoss (waterfall)

Aldeyjarfoss (waterfall)

Mývatn area (loads of bird life)

Dettifoss (waterfall)

Námaskard ( geothermal area)

and other lesser known locations.

We will have the opportunity to see & photograph several species of birds in this area. Some possibilities are White-Tailed Eagles, several species of waterfowl including Whooper Swans, Northern Gannets and Puffins.

Day 6-7-8: (June 27, 28, 29)

We leave Mývatn and head further east. Our destination is Egilsstaðir, the biggest town in the east, we’ll be staying here for 2 nights. Our plan is to visit one of the best puffin colonies in Iceland nearby while here, this time of year is when the puffins are bringing fish for the chick so that should allow for a great photo opportunity. We’ll explore the nearby area and visit one of the fjords which have the beautiful Klifbrekkufossar a river with multiple waterfalls cascading from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the fjord. We’ll also visit a stunning waterfall Hengifoss. Stuðlagil is a must visit while we are in the east, it’s a basalt column heaven, a deep gorge with basalt column walls with turquoise water running through it.

On June 29th you’ll catch your flight back to Reykjavík in time to jump on your flight back home, or if you like you can extend your stay and enjoy Iceland in the summertime.
